Schooling and Hostel Facility for Disabled - mangalorean.com

From mangalorean.com Mangalore: How often have you had to rush back from work or cancel appointments or miss a function because there’s no one to take care of your child back home? It truly gets difficult to tag the child as their tantrums can make life miserable. When Keerthana, a mother of a special child, had to sacrifice her job and all its luxuries because she found it difficult to balance work and home – she had to fetch her child from […]

Truly Heaven’s Special Children!

Truly Heaven's Special Children!

nce upon a time, a handicapped boy asked his mother why was he so different from others. So, his mother explained, “when it was time for another handicapped child to be born, the Lord and his counsellors held a meeting to decide where he should be sent, where there would be a family to love him. Well, our family was chosen.” This conversation on radio made John and Edna realize that their 18 month old handicapped baby girl Ruth is […]

A long holiday at Riya

A long holiday at Riya

t was a long weekend and a planned four days of holidaying to spend time with the kids at Riya. It all started off with a huge festive rush leading to all tickets booked and I stood stranded not knowing how to reach my destination. May be luck was on my side that day (Not literally I must say). I managed to get a ticket in an economy class government red bus (KSRTC) where the seats reminded me of my […]

Life is a cinema…

Life is a cinema…

The day I took the decision of starting Riya Foundation, I never ever asked myself would I be able to take up the challenge. It was an impulsive decision like many others that I had taken. But I was clear of the way I wanted to run it and what I expected. It’s been 3 years and the journey has never been smooth. We have had our shares of success and failures. There have been questions that even I have […]

COME…TOUCH MY LIFE…

COME...TOUCH MY LIFE...

Quite a few people have made a lot of difference in Riya’s life. Times when she has strayed away, when she is in danger, when she has to get in and out of the car, when she had to eat, when she is stuck in the house or in the car. Recently once Riya was stuck in the car. What happened was… after completing all the chores of the house; we were all set to go to school. I pulled […]

Poem…

Poem...

When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit. … Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns As every one of us sometimes learns. And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he […]

Making a Difference !!

Making a Difference !!

Birth of a child in a family is usually welcomed with great joy and expectations, but this happiness slowly disappears as they learn about the disabilities of the child. No matter what disability, the parental reaction takes a different course in time. The dependency of the child on the family is the most important factor in the process of accepting the child with their abnormality. Most of the parents find it too difficult to accept a special child into the […]

One Behind the Scene

One Behind the Scene

It’s often people behind the scene that lose out on the limelight. Today I would like to take the time to talk about these great women who have been silently building Riya brick by brick. Keerthana (Keeth) and Devamma (Amma)………. Devamma joined Riya at a time when we were running from pillar to post searching for a cook to take care of the needs of the children. It’s very easy to find a person who will work for money but […]

A DAY WITH “RIYA”

A DAY WITH “RIYA”

On the night of December 25th, 2000 when the entire world was celebrating their ‘Millennium Christmas’, I went into labor. The hospital did not have enough staff to handle the emergencies and there was utter chaos everywhere. However the duty doctor and the nurse on duty tried their best to help me and make me comfortable. It was a very crude and a hurried delivery. At 12.20 am, through the pain, I heard a distant cry of the baby. Yes! […]

Down memory lane

Down memory lane

It’s been the most difficult of things to do, putting your thoughts into words. Today when I talk about Riya, am quite surprised we managed to make this dream come alive. I remember the day when we sat down thinking how we will manage to feed the kids without a job in hand, where will they stay? How do we send them to school? How can we make it children friendly and many more such questions? Keerthana was very clear […]
